Bulla Road Bridge Lane Changes

New line markings on the Bulla Road Bridge will help reduce queuing and improve access to DFO Essendon.

The Victorian Government and Essendon Airport Pty Ltd (Essendon Fields) are working together to improve traffic conditions at the Bulla Road Bridge freeway interchange. This is a public and private partnership funded project by the Victorian Government, under the Smart Roads Program, and Essendon Airport Pty Ltd.

This interchange becomes very congested during the weekend peak, with large queues for vehicles exiting the DFO Essendon shopping precinct. By reconfiguring the existing turn lanes on the bridge, new twin right turn lanes for vehicles exiting to the Tullamarine and Calder Freeways will be created, improving the overall flow of traffic and providing a safer road for users. This means one less turning lane for those turning from Bulla Road bridge towards the city (please refer to map).

The traffic flows have been carefully assessed and far greater benefits for more travellers are expected with this new turning lane configuration. Overall, the benefit from improved traffic flow will outweigh a minor increase in travel time for the am and pm peak period. VicRoads will be watching to ensure traffic keeps flowing by installing CCTV cameras to monitor traffic changes, enabling them to respond with improved traffic light sequencing to reduce queues.

What to expect:

  • Works will take place at night between June and July, commencing Sunday 27 June
  • There will be some noise and dust during works
  • Road access will be maintained throughout
  • Safe speeds will be in place around the works zone to keep crews safe

Please plan ahead during these works and look out for signs.

We thank you for your patience while these works are completed and look forward to delivering a more efficient road for our community.
