EF welcomes new state of the art Ambulance Victoria aircraft
One of Essendon Fields’ most important emergency services tenants, Ambulance Victoria, has announced a major upgrade to its air ambulance fleet now visible on the airport’s aprons and runways as they take to the skies.
Ambulance Victoria has welcomed two new Beechcraft King Air 260 and two new King Air 360 aircraft, which feature the latest technology. The air ambulance fleet will continue to be comprised of four fixed-wing aircraft and five helicopters, providing a vital link between rural communities and metropolitan health services.
Ambulance Victoria Manager Air Operations Brad Martin said the upgrade to the new fixed wing aircraft is a major boost to its important services throughout the state.
“Our highly skilled flight paramedics are among the best in the world, and it’s essential they have access to the latest aeromedical equipment and aviation technology,” stated Mr. Martin.
The aircraft are equipped with an innovative high-tech Stryker stretcher loading system, a feature of Ambulance Victoria’s air ambulance helicopters since 2021, which has successfully reduced patient transfer times by up to 20 minutes. This exciting advancement allows for faster patient loading and unloading, ensures a smoother ride for patients, and significantly reduces the risk of injury for paramedics and flight crews.
“Our team have welcomed these advanced aircraft, with their ability to enhance both patient safety and comfort,” he added.
Ambulance Victoria said the new aircraft have replaced their highly regarded Beechcraft King Air B200c aircraft and will continue to be based out of their 6,127 sqm hangar/office/training room facility which they share with the Victoria Police airwing at present on a 26,344 sqm site at 12 Global Avenue.
Highlighting that over 30% of aircraft movements at Essendon Fields are related to emergency services, Essendon Fields’ GM Aviation Matt Marais emphasized the critical role of Ambulance Victoria at the airport and expressed excitement about the major aircraft upgrade.
“We recognise the incredible work that Ambulance Victoria perform daily to support patients across Victoria from its base at Essendon Fields. Our 24-hr access for emergency movements and proximity to major hospitals are key factors that make Essendon Fields the vital emergency services hub it is today. Our community have already embraced these new state-of-the-art emergency service aircraft in action,’’ he said.
