At Essendon Fields we’re committed to protecting our local environment today, for a sustainable tomorrow. This includes ensuring we minimise the impact of our daily operations and development works, whilst creating clean, green spaces for our local community to enjoy.

Urban regeneration plans at Essendon Fields focus heavily on the implementation of pocket parks, walking trails and outdoor spaces in order to attract joggers, cyclists and walkers. The 2019-2027 Airport Environment Strategy was also implemented in order to outline Essendon Fields’ environmental objectives and ensure a robust management framework is in place to ensure compliance with our environmental obligations.

New developments from 2014 onwards have included rainwater harvesting tanks, and rainwater collected from new hangar rooves is redistributed to our onsite tree farm. In 2021 we achieved a 10,000 tree target for the precinct, and are cultivating an additional 5,000 trees to reach a new target of 15,000 trees on site as soon as achievable.

The success of this approach is evident, with our on-site landscapers Super Gardens taking out the 2018 Victorian Commercial Landscape Management and Maintenance Award for their continued work on the Essendon Fields precinct.

OUR INITIATIVES:
  • 100% of carbon emissions from airfield lighting offset
  • 15,000 tree target for the precinct, supported by on-site plant nursery
  • Planting of drought tolerant and low maintenance landscaping for efficient water use
  • New buildings that have achieved 5-star green star ratings include 6 English Street, Linfox HQ and Hyatt Place Hotel.
  • Rejuvenation of existing old building structures and materials into new purposes
  • Installation of a controlled runway lighting system using standby power to reduce power consumption
  • Network of bio-swales constructed which reduce water requirements for gardens
  • Over 1 million litres of rainwater storage capacity towards our target of 1.5 million litres
  • Rain water harvested from hangar rooves and redistributed to the on-site tree farm
  • Installation of electric vehicle charging station in the automotive precinct
  • Rollout of roof top solar PV panels, creating significant power supply that feeds back into the EF embedded network
  • Incorporation of water sensitive urban design initiatives and energy efficient appliances and fittings into designs.
