Record-breaking year for car sales at Essendon Fields Auto

Australia’s biggest auto precinct at Essendon Fields keeps breaking annual sales records.

Essendon Fields Auto today reported its dealers sold 22,138 cars in 2024, with an estimated sales value of around $1 billion, in another record-breaking year. For the third consecutive year sales at the auto hub exceeded 21,000 vehicles, with a new benchmark in 2024 as sales exceeded 22,000 for the first time since opening in 2008.

Over the last 16 years, Essendon Fields Auto has grown to become the largest single-site collection of car dealerships in Australia, with 20 big brand dealerships on site, and three more on the way.

Overall, used cars sales growth showed the biggest uplift at Essendon Fields Auto in 2024, up 25% on 2023, helped by the opening of dealerships for Dutton One and Penske Select, as well as the expansion of Blinkr.

Significantly, last year’s record sales number is set to be broken again in 2025, with Zagame Automotive opening two new dealerships mid-year for Audi and CUPRA, and Auto League also expanding its Toyota dealership into new premises, opening in 2026.

Nine of Australia’s top ten biggest selling car brands of last year all have dealerships at Essendon Fields including Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Kia, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, MG, Isuzu Ute and Subaru.

Essendon Fields CEO Brendan Pihan said an illustration of the customer drawing power of Essendon Fields Auto was that total vehicle sales (new and used) in the precinct grew by 5% year on year in 2024, compared to new car sales nationally remaining relatively flat.

“In an evolving market, Essendon Fields Auto keeps growing from strength to strength, proving that for dealerships there is power in the collective, and for customers there is convenience and choice by heading to one location that has it all,” said Mr Pihan.

“It’s quite incredible that the volume of new and used car sales coming out of our dealership strip represent 1.8% of new cars sold in the whole of Australia last year. We were delighted to welcome new dealerships and brands in 2024, and also see established dealerships like Airport Toyota commit to expanding their footprint and securing their future in the precinct on a new site,’’ he finished.

Essendon Fields Auto is excited about future growth prospects, especially after the Australian automotive market also broke all-time records for new vehicle sales in 2024 – with over 1.2 million new vehicles sold for the second year running.
