Elenium Breaks Ground at Essendon Fields

Essendon Fields latest development hub, a high-tech precinct, is set to be the new home of Elenium Automation. Elenium is a global leader of self-service and automation technology for the travel sector. EF’s newest business precinct’s 35 hectares of developable land offers large allotments suited to house hi-tech industrial and light manufacturing operations with a large office based workforce such as Elenium.

The site encompasses 1,068 sqm office and 1,550 sqm workshop and will fulfil a requirement for up to 60 staff. The Melbourne based start-up creates innovative products that aid the efficiency of travel through the automation of previously manually handled processes such as check-in, screening and luggage drop off.

With a construction value of almost $5million, this purpose-built facility has been designed by JMA Architects, the firm behind the recent Essendon Fields Airport Terminal refurbishment.

Environmental efficiency was a considerable factor in the design and Elenium’s new factory will incorporate 370 solar rooftop panels which feedback into the local EF grid.

The business has gone from strength to strength and partnered with Etihad Airways in March 2019, as its self-service vendor. One of the first products released by Elenium was a piece of hardware that was used to read bag tags correctly the first time, every time.

Cofounder and Chief Executive Aaron Hornlimann has extensive experience in the airline sector and has an aim to make the check in and bag drop process a more seamless experience. He has been quoted as saying “at Elenium, we’re building something that’s actually going to be used by tens if not hundreds of millions of people,”

Elenium now has 50 airlines using its patented technology in seven airports across the world, and has contracted an additional 30 within the next year so timing for their new premises is opportune. Construction by Tandem Building Group commenced late last year and handover is expected to take place in June 2020.
